There have been reports from Italy stating that Napoli are interested in taking Petr Cech from Arsenal. And it could well be a blessing in disguise.
Goalkeeping has been an area of huge concern for Arsenal over the years. We have had some talented keepers in the past, however none of them have proved to be reliable. To compete for top honours, the club needs a keeper who will save you points, rather than cost you. Sadly at Arsenal, the latter has often been the case.
John Terry once said that Petr Cech will save Arsenal at least 15 points a season. There have been games where he has done well. However, he has cost the club more points than he has saved. He gets beaten far too easily at his near post. To make matters worse, his distribution is nothing short of woeful. To add to all of this, he has only saved one penalty for Arsenal – that too in his 16th attempt. Some will say he is unlucky, but the manner in which he gets beaten makes you think otherwise.
Unai Emery’s style of football is to build from the back. Good distribution is one of the pre-requisites to be a keeper under Unai. David Ospina, although error prone at times fits that bill. He is also a good shot stopper and has definitely been a lot more convincing than Cech all in all. Ospina is 29 years old which is a good age for a keeper. There is still scope for improvement. Cech on the other hand is 36 and regressing.
Multiple reports have linked us with Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno. Kike Marin, who is close to Unai Emery has come out and said that he is Arsenal’s No.1 keeping target. And should we land him, it could well mean one of Ospina or Cech leaving. And when you look at the facts, it has to be Petr Cech.
